October 31, 2025 | BARAYAGWIZA Sylvain
From October 27–31, 2025, members of the WALL Project participated in the 29ᵗʰ Réunion des Sciences de la Terre (RST 2025) held in Montpellier, France. This national conference brought together geoscientists from across the world to discuss cutting-edge research on Earth and environmental sciences. At RST 2025, three members of the WALL team presented their ongoing research:
• Sylvain Barayagwiza presented “Numerical simulation of slope stability and landslides under different loadings in Karongi district, Western Rwanda,” focusing on physics-based modeling of landslide risk under seismic and hydrological influences.
• Mariette Simonnet presented “Analyse statistique et géographique de l’impact à long terme de l’activité volcanique sur la santé au Rwanda,” highlighting the long-term health implications of volcanic emissions.
• Sarra Kazi Tani Latifa presented “La podoconiose : maladie tropicale négligée du Rift africain, à l’interface entre géologie et santé publique,” exploring how volcanic soils contribute to the occurrence of podoconiosis, a neglected tropical disease.
Together, these studies reflect the interdisciplinary approach of the WALL Project, which aims to understand the interactions between volcanic activity, climate change, soil evolution, and human health in Western Rwanda.
We thank the Réunion des Sciences de la Terre organizing committee for the opportunity to share our work and exchange with the broader geoscience community.
